On The Run - December 2020

In this month's issue Sherri Ellerby reports on the November club race and Amy Katz shares some festive holiday sweet treats.

OC/Irvine Turkey Trot 5K By Sherri Ellerby

I was very excited to participate in our club’s November race. It was my first time entering a non-virtual paid race since my triathlon in early March of this pandemic year.

It was disappointing to learn it had been moved to a more challenging course, utilizing the Aliso Creek bike trail instead of the fast and flat route around Irvine Valley College that was originally planned. But I didn’t want to do another virtual race, so I went with the flow and showed up on the cold morning, with some race nerves kicking in - a feeling I so miss!

It felt just like a race seeing a registration table and volunteers milling about, preparing the event. Waiting in line to pick up my bib number. Pinning on a bib number! Seeing a few SCRR friends arrive. And it was a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. I haven’t done one of those in years! Some of my favorite things.

The course was a very familiar one. A Snail’s Pace Running club used to run here on their Wednesday night group runs. It was also the “scene of the crime” where I broke a metatarsal in my foot years ago on one of those ASP club runs.

The short hills still felt challenging while pushing a 5K race effort. I so miss running in a pack with hundreds of people around me, but the out and back course with staggered starts still meant I could see other runners and pass some of them. The loud footsteps of Mike Connors behind me and eventually passing me made it an even more fun competition.

The race organizers did a great job making this a safe event. Everyone was following the requirement of wearing a mask while walking around the start and finish area. I was also impressed that runners and volunteers were really making an effort to spread out and not stand close together.

Since groups of 10-15 runners signed up for a particular start time, there never was a large gathering of people in Sycamore Park at the end of Charlinda Drive in Mission Viejo. This is what I witnessed during my 2-hour window that I was there for my 7:00 am start time.

All in all, I was so grateful for being able to run and race on Thanksgiving morning. They even had race results posted online within 24 hours of the race.

Joel Whitson was 3rd overall in the race, followed by 4th overall Mike Connors. Two SCRR ladies were in the top 3 females overall! I was 2nd and Amy Dayao was 3rd overall. The OC/Irvine Turkey Trot 5K was well-organized and had friendly volunteers.
