Saturday Run - Dana Point SHIP to Rail

Leader: Ryan Vieau

Directions: From PCH in Dana Point, turn left onto Dana Point Harbor Drive and follow it until it dead ends near the Ocean Institute. Parking is all around. We'll meet almost to the end of DPH Drive, near the little pier in Dana Point Harbor (near the Ship and bathrooms).

About the Run: This is an out and back flat run that will cover a portion of the "Dana Point Turkey Trot" course. One possible turnaround point is at the end of the parking lot just past the San Clemente Metrolink Station. Total distance is about 10.6 miles. Shorter options are available. For a 12.8 mile run, continue running along the footpath to the next turnaround point, the San Clemente Pier. For those of you needing a little more mileage, you can add on 2 or 4 more miles by including the island in the harbor. If you’re doing a 20-miler, you can continue along the path that goes beyond the San Clemente Pier then turnaround when necessary. Bring water, although several drinking fountains are located along the way. Lots of restrooms!

After the Run: Coffee Importers at the Ocean Institute (they moved) or Proud Mary’s is a fun and tasty breakfast spot, located in the harbor. Park for Proud Mary’s is in the parking lot near The Brig.

Park at the tennis courts in Turtle Rock Community Park off of Sunnyhill.

There are bathrooms and a water fountain available near the tennis courts if needed.

We’ll start at 6:15 with a one mile warmup through the neighborhood and then head into Ralph Bren Park for the hill repeats. We’ll run repeats on a .4 mile path in the park starting near Turtle Rock Drive and finish where it meets up with Ridgeline. The path is well-lit the entire way so visibility isn’t an issue despite it still being dark at 6 pm. It is a concrete sidewalk surface but if we run back down the hill on the grass it shouldn’t be too bad. Saturday Run - TOUR OF UCI

Leader: AJ Shaka

Directions: Meet at Chaupain Bakery, 2622 San Miguel Dr., Newport Beach.

About the Run: This is a fun 10.5 mile run with an outer and inner loop around UCI - check out the map link below! From the starting parking lot, we will go down Prairie Road, immediately turning right on Bonita Canyon, passing by St. Matthew’s Church. At Chambord, we cross Bonita Canyon, to run on the other side, with a wide sidewalk at no interruptions. At about 1.5 miles, at the intersection with Anteater Drive, we turn left and head toward the main UCI campus.  At California Ave, a left turn leads to a hill climb into University Hills.  Staying on California Ave, we sweep around in a gradual arc.  California becomes Los Trancos which we take past some new construction to East Peltason.  Turn left on East Peltason and run downhill (one side has sidewalk, the other is packed dirt-- take your choice) to the stoplight, Michael Drake.

Taking a left turn, we run along Drake (which becomes Bison) until we reach California Ave (a different one!), turn right and run through the industrial park, until Academy Way.  Turn right on Academy Way and then left on West Peltason Drive.  Crawford Hall Athletics will be on the left, and a large storage tank with the Anteater mascot will be on the right.  Passing the Bren Events Center, take a right-hand turn onto Pereira and run, parallel to Campus Drive, a short distance until the Irvine Barclay Theater and Rose Garden appear on the left.  Turn right into the Bus Loop by the Main Admin building (mile 5.7), go up the stairs and then make a counterclockwise loop along the Ring Mall road.  We'll see all the main buildings on campus.

After the 360° Ring Mall loop, we continue along Pereira in the same direction, going past the Law School.  A left turn (still called Pereira) leads to the intersection with East Peltason.  Here we cross East Peltason and then bear left on South Adobe Circle, past the student dorms.  South Adobe curves around and meets California Ave where we turn right and then an immediate left onto Arroyo Drive.  Graduate student housing is along this segment.  At Vista del Campo, a left turn connects us back to Culver Drive.  Cross to the other side and then take Culver (which becomes Bonita Canyon) all the way back to Prairie road, where a left turn will lead back to the parking lot where we started. Possible Tour of Lab after run - more info to come.

Saturday Run - 3 Piers

Leader:

Location: Meet at the Newport Beach Pier. Arrive early for parking (can pay by card or phone at the metered lot or find nearby street parking).

Directions: From the 5 Freeway to 55-S, follow signs to the Newport Beach Pier. Search “Sharkeez Newport Beach” on Google Maps for exact directions to the pier/pier parking lot.

About the Run: This is a club favorite that starts/ends at the Newport Beach Pier and takes us on endless flat miles along the beach! Most of the club will start from the Newport Pier and head north towards the HB Pier for an 11.1 mile out-and-back run, which can easily be shortened or extended for your desired mileage. Another option is to run south towards the Breakers (passing the CDM Pier) for a 5.75 mile out-and back. To get the three piers, you can start before the run to do the 5.75 miles Breakers run, then meet the club at the start to run the HB Pier run together. Restrooms and water fountains are available throughout the run, primarily clustered closer to the HB Pier.

After the Run: There are great deals on breakfast at Baja Sharkeez. Other options nearby are The Helmsman or Charlie’s Chili.

Saturday Run - UCI to Back Bay

Leader:

Location: Meet in the parking lot of Trader Joe's and Peet's Coffee at 4213 Campus Dr in Irvine.

Directions: 405 north or south, exit Culver, head south (towards ocean), turn right on Campus, turn right on Stanford, turn left into the University Town Center shopping center.

About the Run: Run begins with a half-mile jog along Campus to the San Diego Creek Trail/Mountains to the Sea Trail, which runs parallel to University Dr. From Campus, make a right onto the trail so you can make a quick U-turn and take the underpass down the trail towards the Back Bay. From the Mountains to the Sea Trail, when you reach Jamboree, turn left for the “standard” (clockwise) Back Bay route or right to run the counterclockwise “wrong way Back Bay” route. It’s about 14.5 miles if you run the full Back Bay loop from UCI, and you can easily run any mileage as an out-and-back run.

Since Sunday will be a race day for many club members, most will be doing shorter distances (2-6 miles) by running out-and-back.

After the Run: Lots of breakfast and coffee options in the shopping center, and we’ll meet outside of Peet’s.

Saturday Run - Laguna Niguel Reservoir

Leader:

Location: Jack’s Woodside Grille, 30065 Alicia Pkwy A, Laguna Niguel (be sure to put the A in your maps program)

About the Run: Any distance is possible, and this description is for about 10 miles. Most of this run is on paved trails, and the dirt sections are wide, smooth fire roads. From the corner of Alicia and Ivy Glenn Dr, run down Ivy Glenn to Niguel, cross and go right. Turn left on Crown Valley (after ~2 blocks), and then after one block, turn right into driveway, and onto trail (the start of the trail is about 30-40 feet away from the road through the parking lot, but is easy to see). Follow the trail past the YMCA and water treating plant. When entering the park at about the 1.5 mile point, go right across a small wooden bridge. Run along the side of the reservoir to the end of the park. At about mile 2.7, after the road starts circling back, make a right on a side road in the park (which will go past tennis courts), and in about 0.5 miles, come to Alicia Pwky. There is a pedestrian crossing light, just up a short way to the left. Cross there and go right for a short distance and then left on AWMA Road. Make a right on the Alicia Creek trail and then go out and back for whatever distance you’d like. The 5 mile turnaround is just past Pacific Park Drive. On the way back, run around the other side of the reservoir, by going right when hitting the circling road in the park.

After the Run: Coffee and breakfast at Jack’s.

  • Google Calendar ICS

Leader:

Location: Aliso Wood Canyons starting at the West Ridge Trailhead (at the top of Cholla trail) near 63 or 66 Hollyleaf in Aliso Viejo). NOTE: No restrooms at the start, and we need to be quiet to respect the neighbors.

Directions: From Irvine, go south on the 5, exit Lake Forest. Go right at the end of the ramp, left on Moulton Pkwy, and then follow a GPS to the address shown above.

About the Run: Mostly loop course, 9 to 11.5 miles on mainly dirt trails. Bring water and consider trail shoes.

Follow the ridge trail at the top of the hill, past the intersections with Cholla, Lynx, Rock-It and Mathis trails to Top to the World and Alta Laguna park (2.3 miles). There are restrooms and a water fountain at the park. Continue straight on Alta Laguna Blvd for 1.2 miles until the road ends, and take trailhead on the right. Run behind the houses on the trail, until it comes to the partially-paved ridge trail and go right (there will be beautiful ocean views if it is not foggy). In 0.3 miles, go left on Meadows Trail. This is a steep downhill section with lots of switchbacks. At the bottom of the trail, turn left for the 9 mile loop or go right towards the water treatment plant (mostly on the road), out for 1.25 miles and then turn back. For both routes, turn left at Woods Canyon Trail (at the outhouses) which are 0.4 miles from the bottom of Meadows Trail (when going left at the bottom of Meadows). Follow Woods Canyon Trail for 3 miles, and make a left on Cholla trail which will take us back to our cars.

After the Run: Lupe’s Mexican Eatery (2.2 miles away), in Aliso Viejo Town Center, 26541 Aliso Creek Rd.

After passing University H.S. turn right into Mason Park and run the paved trail parallel to University Ave. At Ridgeline, go left about 40’ to the light, cross and continue on the trail which will take you back to the pedestrian bridge across the 405, and back to the start. The loop is 11.0 miles (a bit shorter if you finish along E. Yale Loop).  You can easily add on extra miles along the San Diego Creek bike trail before or in Bommer Canyon.  There are three water fountains on the trail.

After the Run: Starbucks, Chronic Tacos, Big City Bagels, and Juice It Up.

Saturday Run - Santiago Oaks/Irvine Regional Park

Leader: Micah Whitson

Location: We will meet off E Chapman Ave and Jamboree in the parking lot right in front of John’s Place

About the run: This run is a mix of road and dirt horse path/trail, it goes through parks with a few small hills. We leave the parking lot and start running west on Chapman for a mile until we turn right into Orange Park Acres; after mile 1.8 turn right on N. Meads Ave and continue until the street dead ends, turn right onto Windes Drive at mile 2.7. This street will turn into Windes Trail taking you into Santiago Oaks regional park.

At mile 3.3 veer left onto the Santiago Creek trail, and stay on that trail until mile 4.5; turn right onto the Great Egret Trail, and in a few hundred feet veer left again onto Willow trail. This will take you into Irvine Regional Park where you will loop a long right turn around Santiago Creek and up a short hill for the water tank lookout- continue on the trail until reaching Jamboree where you can turn right on Chapman where we parked for ~15k (9.3 miles) or you can continue south on Jamboree to get as many additional miles as you like (12-14 or more) through Peters Canyon, where we hold our spring & summer Monday evening runs.

Water and restrooms can be found throughout Irvine Regional Park (mile 5-8) and Peters Canyon by the parking lot off Canyon View Ave and Jamboree Rd. See link below for map:

Club Run - Mariner's Farmer's Market

  • Mariner's Church Parking Lot (Near Chapel) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Leader: Michael Tang

Directions: Exit 405 Freeway @ Culver. Go south on Culver which becomes Bonita Canyon Road once you cross Shady Canyon Rd. Go past Turtle Ridge drive and turn left into driveway on the North side of the campus. If you enter on the West side of campus from Newport Coast Dr, turn left from the driveway and park on either right or left side lots. There is ample parking in the complex. We will meet in front of the Chapel. Bathrooms are in a nearby Building 3.

About the Run: This is a modified Quail Hill Loop in reverse from the Mariner’s Church. The standard run is 10 miles but can be shortened or lengthened.

Detailed Description: Leaving the Mariner's Church parking lot, turn right onto Bonita Canyon Road. At the second light, turn Right onto Shady Canyon Road and continue the Quail Hill Route in reverse, with the exception of crossing the 405…DO NOT CROSS THE 405 unless you want to make the run longer. Instead, continue on the Shady Canyon bikeway trail on the west side of the freeway. This merges with University Trail (it’s all one continuous trail, two different names). After you pass the Tanaka Strawberry Farm you run into Ridgeline. Cross the street (obeying walk signals) and go left. Within 100 feet on your right hand side, the University trail continues through an urban park with lots of concrete and tall grass. The trail drops you off onto Culver (which turns into Bonita Canyon Road). This will be a gradual climb all the way back to the Farmer’s Market. Turn left just past the signal at Anteater into the driveway for Mariner's Church. There are water and/or bathroom stops at Bommer Canyon parking lot, Quail Hill parking lot and where the University trail meets Culver (Water only).

Link for the road run in gmaps pedometer-http://www.mappedometer.com/?maproute=438087

After the run: We can enjoy breakfast and shopping at the Farmer’s Market. There are food stands with options such as burritos, doughnuts, coffee, and smoothie/juices. The farmer’s market is open until 12.
