Saturday Run - Spyglass Hill

  • Marguerite Ave and Ocean Blvd Corona Del Mar, CA 92625 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Leader: Dave Bauers

Directions: PCH, west on Marguerite (towards ocean), until it dead-ends on Ocean Blvd.

About the Run: The standard run is a 12 mile hilly loop on the beautiful roads of CDM/Newport Beach. There are options to shorten or lengthen the run. One can also opt for flatter beach running that starts at the same location, but then it wouldn’t be Spyglass Hill!

Two routes posted with the standard 12.4 mile loop or a shorter 6.7 mile option.

Shorter 6.7 mile route: https://www.strava.com/routes/2885991579369270930

Longer 12.4 mile route:

After the Run: Bruegger’s Bagels and/or Starbucks, across the street from each other on the corner of Goldenrod and PCH - 2743 East Coast Highway, Corona Del Mar 92625

Monday Night Club Run from Citrus Ranch Park

Location: Meet at Citrus Ranch Park in Tustin. Public restrooms and drinking fountains are available at the start.

Time: The run starts at 6:15 PM, so please arrive 10-15 min early to find parking and the group.

Pace and Distance - All levels of runners are welcome to join us. This run is out and back, so the distance is self-set. There are also several different routes available. Some walk, some do walk/run intervals, and some will run the whole distance.

Routes - We'll run out along Peters Canyon Trail taking us into Peters Canyon Regional Park. The route is out and back, so the distance is self set. There are many ways to add more distance. You can do a loop around the reservoir or take the ridge route for some very challenging hills. In case of rain, the Peters Canyon trails may be closed. Run leaders may advise running the “down route” south towards Tustin (as opposed to North to Peters Canyon) with the turn around at Bryan.

Our Monday night runs are co-hosted by RunOC from Meetup. Check them out here: Run OC (Irvine, CA) | Meetup

Saturday Run - Wrong Way Back Bay

Leader: Kirsten H.

Location: Mariners Park (Intersection of Mariners Dr. and Dover Dr., Newport Beach)

Directions: From the Irvine Area, 405 North (or 5 North) to 55 South, which becomes Newport Blvd. Turn left on 19th St. In 1 mile 19th St. becomes Dover Dr. Proceed about ¼ mile to Mariners Drive, where the park is located. At the park, there are bathrooms, parking lot and street parking options, a park for the children (and those with child-like spirits).

About the Run: This run is a variation of an SCRR favorite. We will run the Back Bay Loop going counter-clockwise. From Mariner’s Park- to get to Galaxy Drive, take Mariner’s Road towards the bay. When returning, you’ll turn Right onto Mariners and run up to the park! Depending on your knowledge of the area (aka, which corners you want to cut), this can be a 9 to 11.5 mile run. Also, you can extend the run with an out and back on the San Diego Creek trail, or you can continue down Jamboree and do a loop of the Balboa Islands.

This link will provide a map of the route:
https://www.mappedometer.com/?maproute=403560

Please note, this does change the timing and order of the water fountains. There are bathrooms and water at mile 4 and 8.

After the Run: Breakfast at Westcliff Plaza (you can either walk or relocate your cars). There is outdoor seating with several options including Pandor Café and Bakery, OEB Breakfast, Chronic Tacos, and Pressed Juicery.

This is the day before the OC Marathon + Half Marathon. If you need to go to the expo for packet pickup, it will be at the OC Fair + Event Center from 10a-5p.

Saturday Run - UCI to Back Bay

Leader: Jeanie L.

Location: Meet in the parking lot of Trader Joe's and Peet's Coffee at Campus and Stanford in Irvine.

Directions: 405 north or south, exit Culver, head south (towards ocean), turn right on Campus, turn right on Stanford, turn left into the University Town Center shopping center.

About the Run: Run begins with a half-mile jog along Campus to the San Diego Creek Trail/Mountains to the Sea Trail, which runs parallel to University Dr. From Campus, make a right onto the trail so you can make a quick U-turn and take the underpass down the trail towards the Back Bay. From the Mountains to the Sea Trail, when you reach Jamboree, turn left for the “standard” (clockwise) Back Bay route or right to run the counterclockwise “wrong way Back Bay” route. It’s about 14.5 miles if you run the full Back Bay loop from UCI, and you can easily run any mileage as an out-and-back run.

If you prefer not to run Back Bay, when you turn right from Campus on the Mountains to the Sea Trail, don’t make a U-turn. You can continue running along the Mountains to the Sea Trail towards Irvine/Tustin.

Link to Strava Route (UCI to Back Bay with standard loop)

After the Run: Peets Coffee, Le Diplomate Cafe, Blue Bowl, Breakfast Republic, and many other nearby food options.

Saturday Run - Aliso Creek Bike Trail/Laguna Niguel Reservoir

Leader: Mike B

Directions: From the 5 Freeway, exit on Alicia and head west. Turn right into Laguna Hills Community Center parking lot that is the first driveway after Paseo De Valencia.

About the Run: Starting from the Community Center, we will run up Paseo De Valencia, turn left on Laguna Hills Dr., and run down to Sheep Hills Park. At the park, we will pick up the Aliso Creek Trail and run on the trail up to the Mormon Church at the entrance to Aliso Woods. Instead of going into Aliso Woods, we will cross Alicia (there is a special pedestrian light) and go into Laguna Niguel Regional Park and run around the scenic reservoir. The main 10-mile run would then head back, re-crossing Alicia at the same light, and back along the creek trail. Distance can be added at the far end of the reservoir (before turning to make the loop), by running out and back on a branch of the trail that heads out to the Laguna Niguel YMCA (turn around at Crown Valley Parkway) or by going into Aliso Woods after running around the reservoir.

After the Run: We can head over towards the Mission Viejo Snail’s Pace and grab food at the Surfin Donuts or the new Philz on the other side of Alicia (both approximately 1.2 miles away). Other options include Balvina’s Mexican Kitchen near the Laguna Hills Mall (also about 1 mile away).

Normally we can grab breakfast just across Paseo De Valencia at Bagel Me! (25461 Alicia Pkwy, Laguna Hills, CA 92653), but Yelp reports they are temporarily closed through ~July 2026.

The Laguna Hills Memorial Day Half/10k/5k will be on Monday 5/27. Packet pick up will be available on Saturday 5/25 from 11a-4p at the Road Runner Sports in Laguna Hills.

Monday Night Club Run from Citrus Ranch Park

Time: The run starts at 6:15 PM, so please arrive 10-15 min early to find parking and the group.

Run leaders may advise running the “down route” south towards Tustin (as opposed to North to Peters Canyon) with the turn around at Bryan.

Saturday Run - Mariner's Farmer's Market

Leader: Michael T.

Directions: Exit 405 Freeway @ Culver. Go south on Culver which becomes Bonita Canyon Road once you cross Shady Canyon Rd. Go past Turtle Ridge drive and turn left into driveway on the North side of the campus. If you enter on the West side of campus from Newport Coast Dr, turn left from the driveway and park on either right or left side lots. There is ample parking in the complex. We will meet in front of the Chapel. Bathrooms are in a nearby Building 3.

About the Run: This is a modified Quail Hill Loop in reverse from the Mariner’s Church. The standard run is 10 miles but can be shortened or lengthened.

Detailed Description: Leaving the Mariner's Church parking lot, turn right onto Bonita Canyon Road. At the second light, turn Right onto Shady Canyon Road and continue the Quail Hill Route in reverse, with the exception of crossing the 405…DO NOT CROSS THE 405 unless you want to make the run longer. Instead, continue on the Shady Canyon bikeway trail on the west side of the freeway. This merges with University Trail (it’s all one continuous trail, two different names). As you pass the Tanaka Strawberry Farm you run into Ridgeline. Cross the street (obeying walk signals) and go left. Within 200 feet on your right hand side, the University trail continues through an urban park with lots of concrete and tall grass. The trail drops you off onto Culver (which turns into Bonita Canyon Road). This will be a gradual climb all the way to the Farmer’s Market. Turn left just past the signal at Anteater into the driveway for Mariner's Church. There are water and/or bathroom stops at Bommer Canyon parking lot, Quail Hill parking lot and where the University trail meets Culver (Water only).

Link for the road run in gmaps pedometer- http://www.mappedometer.com/?maproute=438087

After the run: We can enjoy breakfast and shopping at the Irvine Farmer’s Market. There are food stands with options such as burritos, doughnuts, coffee, and smoothie/juices. The farmer’s market is open until 12.

Park at the tennis courts in Turtle Rock Community Park off of Sunnyhill.
