Saturday Run - TOUR OF UCI
Leader: AJ Shaka
Directions: Meet at Chaupain Bakery, 2622 San Miguel Dr., Newport Beach.
About the Run: This is a fun 10.5 mile run with an outer and inner loop around UCI - check out the map link below! From the starting parking lot, we will go down Prairie Road, immediately turning right on Bonita Canyon, passing by St. Matthew’s Church. At Chambord, we cross Bonita Canyon, to run on the other side, with a wide sidewalk at no interruptions. At about 1.5 miles, at the intersection with Anteater Drive, we turn left and head toward the main UCI campus. At California Ave, a left turn leads to a hill climb into University Hills. Staying on California Ave, we sweep around in a gradual arc. California becomes Los Trancos which we take past some new construction to East Peltason. Turn left on East Peltason and run downhill (one side has sidewalk, the other is packed dirt-- take your choice) to the stoplight, Michael Drake.
Taking a left turn, we run along Drake (which becomes Bison) until we reach California Ave (a different one!), turn right and run through the industrial park, until Academy Way. Turn right on Academy Way and then left on West Peltason Drive. Crawford Hall Athletics will be on the left, and a large storage tank with the Anteater mascot will be on the right. Passing the Bren Events Center, take a right-hand turn onto Pereira and run, parallel to Campus Drive, a short distance until the Irvine Barclay Theater and Rose Garden appear on the left. Turn right into the Bus Loop by the Main Admin building (mile 5.7), go up the stairs and then make a counterclockwise loop along the Ring Mall road. We'll see all the main buildings on campus.
After the 360° Ring Mall loop, we continue along Pereira in the same direction, going past the Law School. A left turn (still called Pereira) leads to the intersection with East Peltason. Here we cross East Peltason and then bear left on South Adobe Circle, past the student dorms. South Adobe curves around and meets California Ave where we turn right and then an immediate left onto Arroyo Drive. Graduate student housing is along this segment. At Vista del Campo, a left turn connects us back to Culver Drive. Cross to the other side and then take Culver (which becomes Bonita Canyon) all the way back to Prairie road, where a left turn will lead back to the parking lot where we started.

Sunday Morning Trails
Leader: Liz M
Location: Melinda Park (28951 Melinda Rd, Mission Viejo, CA 92692) intersection of Melinda Rd and Rancho Santa Margarita Pkwy
Directions: From Alicia Parkway head east towards the mountains (it’s a trail run after all) and go all the way up Alicia until it ends at Santa Margarita Pkwy and make a left. Follow Santa Margarita for ¾ of a mile, turn left on Melinda Rd.
About the Run : We’ll cross Santa Margarita Pkwy and head downhill towards O’Neill Regional Park for about 3/4 of a mile. Veer left after we pass Alicia hitting the dirt for thefirst time, head down a short hill to catch the Arroyo Trabuco Trail, hanging a left. Enjoy a flat wide trail until hitting mile 2 or so. At the end of this stretch we’ll go through anopen gate in a chain-linked fence. Bathrooms and water are straight ahead (you’ll needto go around some trees)—this will be the one water and bathroom stop until we come back around mile 8.
Take a left after we go through the fence but before we cross the street—there will be agravel area. Head towards the Live Oak Trail—when there is a fork with two dirt trailoptions, go right to stay on Live Oak Trail and now the hills begin. When the trail splits atthe top of the hill stay left to remain on Live Oak Trail. We’ll head downhill for a bit, after the trail forks two more times, both times stay left to keep following Live Oak we’ll climb up a hill that will take us up and up—channel your inner mountain lion!
We get a little downhill reprieve until the trail forks; stay left to follow Live Oak. There will be other forks but keep left until about 3.5 miles into the run and we’ll make a sharp right to go up Live Oak and we’ll climb up for less than a quarter of a mile to the Vista Point.
Once you’ve soaked in those glorious views head straight to go down the Vista Point trail and when it forks stay right. At about 4.5 miles into the run, the trail will dead-end into Hoffman Homestead Trail—make a left and go until the trail ends at about 5 miles into the run then turn around and head back the way we came.
Final Stats: 9.9 miles, 1480 feet elevation gain

Annual Mission Bells Run
Leader: Derek Godfrey
We’ll meet at the San Juan Capistrano Train Station, with the run starting near the railroad crossing gates. This is a scenic route through the historic Los Rios District and surrounding area. The run is timed so that we will be in a specific spot where we will all hear the train horn whistle and church bells ring simultaneously on Sunday morning.
About the run: The run should take less than 60 minutes and is approximatley five miles. Since it is an out-and-back route, you can easily run a shorter or longer distance.
Time: Please arrive by 7:00 a.m., with the run starting at 7:15 a.m. sharp!
Location: Meet at San Juan Capistrano Train Station, located at 26701 Verdugo Street, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675, and gathering “on Los Rios Street” across the tracks from the train station.
Parking: The recommended parking is the free dirt lot on the creek side of the railroad tracks, shown in the photo below. This will help avoid getting stuck “on the wrong side of the tracks” if a train comes through before the start.
For anyone who does not want to drive on the dirt/gravel lot, the next best option is the paid parking lot next door, which is $2/hour.
After the Run: We’ll head over to the Swallow’s Inn Pub for breakfast between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. Remember, Swallow’s Inn is old-school and only takes cash. No credit cards.
Dana Point Headlands/Salt Creek
Leaders: Barbara and Victor
Location: Meet in the parking lot near the Ocean Institute/Coffee Importers in Dana Point Harbor.
Directions: From the I-5 Freeway take Exit 79 for CA-1. Follow signs for CA-1/PCH. Continue on E PCH for 1 mile. Left on Dana Point Harbor Drive. Take Dana Point Harbor Drive all the way to the end. You’ll see Baby’s Beach parking on your left just before you come to the cul-de-sac, or continue through the cul-de-sac and park in the Ocean Institute parking lot.
About the run: Basic Route is 11.7 mile looped course. For a 7.2 mile loop, return via the sidewalk from the Monarch Beach Golf Links (where the Salt Creek Trail crosses PCH). The Headlands trail opens at 8:00, so we’ll have a detour in store.
See route map https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=7271616
From the Harbor parking lot we CLIMB STAIRS to Heritage Park. As we run along the bluff we’ll take in panoramic views of Dana Point Harbor. Where the park ends, we pass through a neighborhood onto Santa Clara Ave and then turn left onto Green Lantern. This street becomes Scenic Drive and leads us to the Dana Point Headlands trail. (Note: Headlands trail is only accessible after 8:00 a.m., so not part of the run in the summer months) This single track (0.5 mile) packed dirt trail takes us to a stairway that drops DOWN to Strand Beach. We run on Strand Beach past the Ritz-Carlton where we pick up the Salt Creek Trail. We follow the trail under PCH through the Monarch Beach Golf Links and into Salt Corridor Regional Park. The trail goes under Niguel Road and continues UPHILL through Chapparosa Park to end on Golden Lantern next to the Dog Park. The remaining 3.5 miles on Golden Lantern are DOWNHILL to return back to the Ocean Institute Parking Lot.
Carrying water is recommended. Bathrooms and water are available in the Nature Center at the Dana Point Headlands (Mile 1.6) and at the end of Strand Beach (Mile 3.3). Additional options are the shopping centers at Niguel Road and Salt Creek Trail (Mile 6) and at the corner Golden Lantern and Camino Del Avion (Mile 9.7) Or if you dare, the Ritz-Carlton.
After the Run: Breakfast in Dana Point Harbor (various options including Coffee Importers, Proud Mary's, etc)

(New) Sunday Morning Trails
New! Sunday Morning Trail Run 2nd Sunday of each month. Locations will vary, our first will be at Quail Hill in Irvine
Leader: Micah Whitson
Location: Quail Hill Community Center 39 Shady Canyon Drive, Irvine, CA 92603
Directions: From Sand Canyon Ave/Shady Canyon Dr, take the 1st exit at the traffic circle on Shady Canyon Dr. Drive past the baseball fields on the left and the trailhead parking lot on the right. Take the next left into the Community Center parking lot.
About the Run: This run will consist of several options, one hillier 9.3 mile 'lollipop' route that leads to Nix Nature Center off the 133 highway that is mainly on dirt. There is also a flatter option on that can be ran on the dirt shoulder of the Shady Canyon bike path route to start, or of course an out and back route of either as long as you prefer.
The longer lollipop route starts off with a sizable hill and has some steep climbing on the Quail Trail and Serrano Ridge. We’ll make a left turn around mile 3.5 that will lead to the Nix Nature Center, which has water and a bathroom. The trail continues East, under the 133 and meanders about past Barbara Lake on the right before re-passing underneath the 133 and tying back into the main trail at mile 7, where most of the trail is a net downhill back to Quail Hill Community Center.
Saturday Run - 3 Piers
Leader: Derek Godfrey
Location: Meet at the Newport Beach Pier. Arrive early for parking (can pay by card or phone at the metered lot or find nearby street parking).
Directions: From the 5 Freeway to 55-S, follow signs to the Newport Beach Pier. Search “Sharkeez Newport Beach” on Google Maps for exact directions to the pier/pier parking lot.
About the Run: This is a club favorite that starts/ends at the Newport Beach Pier and takes us on endless flat miles along the beach! Most of the club will start from the Newport Pier and head north towards the HB Pier for an 11.1 mile out-and-back run, which can easily be shortened or extended for your desired mileage. Another option is to run south towards the Breakers (passing the CDM Pier) for a 5.75 mile out-and back. To get the three piers, you can start before the run to do the 5.75 miles Breakers run, then meet the club at the start to run the HB Pier run together. Restrooms and water fountains are available throughout the run, primarily clustered closer to the HB Pier.
After the Run: There are great deals on breakfast at Baja Sharkeez. Other options nearby are The Helmsman or Charlie’s Chili.
